Zentrum für Türkeistudien
The ZfT is a foundation of North-Rhine Westphalia and also an institute at the Universität Duisburg-Essen. The objectives of the ZfT are to promote German-Turkish relations, to improve the level of knowledge and awareness about Turkey and Turkish migrants in Europe, to advance cooperation between Turkey, Germany and other European countries and also to support research and public relations. Thematically it focuses on (1) socio-economic and political developments within Turkey; trade and political relations of Turkey to its neighbours and the European Union and (2) general immigrant research within the Federal Republic of Germany and other European states (e.g. foreign pensioners, foreign companies, foreigners as customers; foreign media; Islam in the immigration). Geographically, research and activities are concentrated on Turkey, Middle Asia, the Balkans, Germany, and the European Union in general. The main tasks of the Centre include the preparation and evaluation of investigative projects, commentaries and reports as well as the holding of professional conferences, congresses and the like. The effectiveness of the work of the ZfT is secured by a variety of activities, projects, consultation, discussions and not least by the willingness of interested students, foreign guests and German and Turkish journalists and media to contribute information and thoughts. This has led in the course of time to a considerable increase in the demand for information from the general and specialized public. The Center, among other things, has initiated the “Bonn Talks”, an event which takes place several times a year and offers interested politicians, scientists, journalists and people engaged in the cultural field possibilities to exchange information and to discuss matters related to Turkey. The ZFT is the publisher of several periodicals such as “Schriftenreihe” (Publication Series), “Migrationsbericht” (Migration Report) and the “Zeitschrift für Türkeistudien” (Journal for Studies on Turkey). The Zft has NGO consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
