Stephan Kampelmann
Stephan studied economics at Maastricht University, Université Paris 1 Sorbonne, Lille University, and the Université Libre de Bruxelles. He prepared his PhD in economics in Lille and Brussels in the framework of the European PhD in Socio-Economic and Statistical Studies network, in which he participated in the Scientific Board as represenative of the doctoral candidates.
Stephan’s Master Thesis “Re-reexamining inequality” won the peer-reviewed Jaques Tymen Award of the Association d’Economie Sociale in 2007. He authored several academic publications on economic inequality and social indicators (e.g. Socio-Economic Review, De Economist, International Journal of Manpower, Revue française d’Economie). Other appointments include the collaboration in a research project on social indicators for the regional government of Nord-Pas de Calais and a position as junior consultant on social indicators for the Foundation Danielle Mitterand.
Stephan was the President of the Internationalist Foundation (2005-2006) and serves currently as Secretary-General for the Foundation. He was also President of the Association des Etudiants en Economie Appliquée (since 2007-2010). He has acquired first-hand experience with migration and development issues through a two year field work in Mexico within the framework of his Social Service for the German Government. He was responsible for several small-scale development projects in Mexico and established close personal contacts with the rural population of the Mexican state Hidalgo, many of whom are seasonal migrants in the United States.
He teaches descriptive statistics and methods of social science at Lille Université and the Institut d’études politiques de Lille. Stephan currently works as economist in the Department of Applied Economics at the Université Libre de Bruxelles.
Stephan is the project co-ordinator of INFOCON.
