Hugh Miall
Hugh MIALL is Professor in International Relations at the Department of Politics and International Relations at the University of Kent. He is Director of the Conflict Analysis Research Centre, which will carry out the research work on conflict policies and CSO work shops for INFOCON. Until 2005 he was a Reader in Peace and Conflict Research and Director of the Richardson Institute at Lancaster University. He was previously a Research Fellow in the European Programme of the Royal Institute of International Affairs, research director of the Oxford Research Group, and a researcher in energy and environmental issues at Earth Resources Research. He has taught at Essex University and the Open University and has been a visiting Research Fellow at the Centre for Conflict Studies at the University of Utrecht. He received his BA in Modern History from Oxford University and his PhD in Politics and International Relations from Lancaster University. His research interests lie in the areas of war and peace, conflict resolution, conflict prevention, and peaceful change. His main area expertise is the wider Europe. He is co-author of highly relevant books and standard references in conflict analysis such as Contemporary Conflict Resolution, Cambridge: Polity, (1999/2005). He also edited a work on the subject of the proposal: Minority Rights in Europe: the scope for a transnational regime, Royal Institute of International Affairs: Pinter (1994). Hugh Miall’s numerous scientific publications include The Peacemakers: Peaceful Settlement of Disputes Since 1945, Macmillan (1992) and Redefining Europe: New Patterns of Conflict and Cooperation, Royal Institute of International Affairs/Pinter (1994) and he co-edited Shaping the new Europe, Royal Institute of International Affairs/Pinter (1993). Hugh Miall previously directed a project called “Peace-Building in Kosovo”, conducting six training and conflict resolution workshops for Kosovo Serbs and Albanian before, during and after the NATO intervention in 1999, with support from DFID and the Westminster Foundation for Democracy. In the framework of INFOCON, Hugh Miall will be responsible for the lead of WP 3 on transnational communities and conflict policies.
