AKAGERA - RHEIN e.V.
Akagera-Rhein e.V. is a German-Rwandan organisation promoting Rwandan culture in Germany. The non-profit organisation was founded in 1994 and includes German and Rwandan members. AKAGERA has the following three objectives: (1) it aims to promote and spread knowledge on Rwandan culture in Germany; (2) it strives to contribute to reconciliation and better understanding after the tragedy of 1994 and the civil war of 1990 and (3) it wants to mobilise help for the psychologically and economically devastated country. To pursue these goals AKAGERA organises regular cultural and informative events. The organisation is funded via membership contributions, donations and revenues from cultural activities. The organisation is convinced that cultural activities are very well suited to create a feeling of belonging and a shared identity among Rwandans living abroad. However, all cultural activity also are directed at non-Rwandans to promote understanding and communication. In this sense, the organisation is set up as a meeting forum for the Rwandan and German population, with whom the organisation shares a strong commitment to democratic values. All members of AKAGERA labour, through their activities, towards the development of a prosperous and peaceful Rwanda. The research carried out in the framework of INFOCON will improve AKAGERA’s contribution to this challenging objective. As a federal body of the Rwandan community in Germany and through its extensive network of contacts in different cities AKAGERA will be of immeasurable help in mapping the Great Lakes communities in Europe.
